The Backstory

It all started back in 2011 when MusicianCorps, a nonprofit social enterprise organized a "day of song and service" on the MLK holiday. People came together in Oakland, CA to learn and play Lean On Me. The day went so well, MusicianCorps decided to host the event annually.

In 2014, events were held in three cities. In 2015, the event grew to fifty cities. A team of volunteers is helping us organize and promote #musicMLK  – and you can join us.

Why MLK Day?

Martin Luther King Day is a national day of service on which Americans in all fifty states volunteer in their communities. Music has a unique power to bring people together and transcend social barriers. We can't think of a better day for music, or a better way to celebrate Dr. King.
